Tutoring Services

There is a Student Success Center on the Catonsville, Dundalk and Essex campuses, as well as the Owings Mills extension center. Students may also take advantage of our convenient online tutoring program.

Individual tutoring

This is the service most people associate with the Student Success Center. In an individual tutoring session a student works one-on-one with a peer, professional, or volunteer tutor to go over assignments, clear up questions and generally advance learning skills. We recommend making an appointment in advance. Walk-ins will also be seen depending on availability.

Group tutoring

This service incorporates group interaction, directed by the tutor, as a dimension of the study process. This can be an effective way of learning, especially when several students are dealing with the same material.

Supplemental instruction

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a program that targets difficult courses and places student mentors, or study leaders, in them. SI leaders are students who have already successfully completed the courses in which they serve as study leaders. As study leaders they take the classes again and guide new students in weekly sessions to review material and work through assignments.

Computer lab

The Student Success Centers also house student computer stations equipped with software including: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access) and ModuMath, a self-paced math program. Students may also use adaptive software like Jaws and Kurzweil. Use of the computers does not require an appointment.
