Nurses work with people of all ages in the promotion of wellness and
prevention of illness. Licensed practical nurses assist registered
nurses and other licensed health care professionals, such as physicians,
and work as members of a health care team to achieve the highest level
of wellness possible for every client.
The Community College of Baltimore County’s (CCBC) Practical Nursing
Certificate Program prepares students for successful employment in the
health care industry as licensed practical nurses (LPNs). The focus is
on ensuring a sound theoretical knowledge base for the performance of
clinical nursing skills. In order to progress through and graduate from
the program, students must take all courses in sequence, (
see Certificate Requirements) and must complete them with a grade of “C”
or better.
Nursing curriculum combines classroom and laboratory courses on the
Dundalk campus and clinical learning experiences in a variety of acute,
sub-acute, long-term, and community health care settings. Full-time
attendance is required for this program, which takes three 15-week
semesters (12 months) to complete. It is strongly recommended that
students not be employed during the entire course of the program because
of the intense nature of the classroom and clinical workload.
Graduates of the Practical Nursing Program receive a certificate from
the College and are eligible to apply to take the National Council
Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN). Success on this exam is a prerequisite
for entry to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
The Practical Nursing Program is approved by the Maryland Board of
Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215-2254,
phone: 410-585-1900, website: www.mbon.org. This Board is recognized as
an accrediting body by the US Department of Education.
