SPCM 101 – 3 Credits
Fundamentals of Speech Communications
Introduces the study of communication; develops an understanding of and applied theoretical principles of verbal and non-verbal interaction. The course covers a variety of communication patterns, including intrapersonal, interpersonal, cross-cultural, group, and the development of public speaking skills.
Prerequisites: ENGL 052 and RDNG 052 (or ESOL 054)
SPCM 105 – 3 Credits
Business and Professional Speaking
Provides practice in presentational speaking, briefing and report techniques, formal group meeting techniques, critical listening, and interviewing skills for the workplace.
Prerequisites: ENGL 052 and RDNG 052 (or ESOL 054)
SPCM 131 – 3 Credits
Oral Interpretation
Studies the ideas and works of established authors and the oral presentation of these works for specific occasions and audiences.
Prerequisite: SPCM 101
SPCM 132 – 1 Credit
Applied Oral Interpretation and Performance
Gives individual instruction in oral interpretation, voice development and diction improvement, and advanced public speaking; provides work on individual goals to enhance students' ability to communicate more effectively using their bodies and voices. NOTE: Same as THTR 132. Credit can be earned for one course only.
Prerequisites: RDNG 052 (or ESOL 054) and ENGL 052
SPCM 133 – 3 Credits
Voice and Diction
Explores the fundamentals of voice production; examines the nature of sound, projection, pronunciation, enunciation, and phonetics (consonant and vowel articulation) in relation to standard American speech; emphasizes analysis of the individual student's voice and diction in a self-improving format. NOTE: Same as THTR 133. Credit can be earned for one course only.
Prerequisites: RDNG 051 (or ESOL 053) and ENGL 051
SPCM 271 – 1 Credit
Internship in Communications
Provides practical experience in a work environment for the advanced student (in Journalism, Speech, Corporate, Mass, and Speech Communications). Includes work experiences in business, industry, educational institutions, social services organizations, or other agencies involved in the appropriate communications activity. Requires supervision by an appropriate advisor during the internship, establishment of learning objectives, and a journal documenting the completion of the learning objectives. 3-20 laboratory hours per week.
Prerequisite: Six credits in the major area and written permission from program coordinator required
SPCM 272 – 2 Credits
