CCBC wins prestigious Bellwether Award

Baltimore, Md. – The Community College of Baltimore County is the recipient of a 2008 Bellwether Award presented by the Community College Futures Assembly, an independent national policy forum which identifies critical issues facing the future of community colleges and recognizes Bellwether Finalist colleges as trend-setting institutions. CCBC was one of three community colleges to receive this prestigious award.

CCBC won in the Instructional Programs and Services category which recognizes programs and services that foster or support teaching and learning in the community college. Of the competitive categories, Instructional Programs and Services had the most competition, with more than 100 nominations received this year from the nation’s 1,200 community colleges.

CCBC’s winning program focused on the college’s faculty-driven assessment program which involves asking the right questions and using data to determine what changes should be implemented to enhance student learning. Curriculum and instructional changes occurred due to this assessment program and have resulted in evidence-based learning improvements that benefit everyone. CCBC’s program was saluted as the “leading example at the community college level,” and was recognized as a model for others to emulate.

From the fall 2007 Bellwether applicants, 30 finalists were selected to compete in three categories – Instructional Programs and Services, Planning, Governance and Finance and Workforce Development. All finalists presented at the Community College Futures Assembly in late January with one winner selected in each category. Brookdale Community College (NJ) and the University of Hawaii-Maui Community College were also among the winners.
