CCBC’s Male Student Success Initiative is hosting a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility panel exploring the experiences, challenges and triumphs among men of color working within the STEM field. Participating in this discussion are Jaime Alvarez, chair, CCBC Engineering department; Oscar Barton, Jr., dean, Morgan Statue University School of Engineering; Kerron Duncan, senior director of Innovation, Northrop Grumman; and Garfield Jones, associate chief of Strategic Technology for the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Department of Homeland Security. The event takes place 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20, CCBC Essex, Administration Building, Lecture Hall, Room 120.
Alvarez oversees the day-to-day operation of academic programs and resources within CCBC’s Engineering department. He holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts in Geography and Environmental Planning with a concentration in Cartography and Geographic Information Systems from Towson University.
Barton received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Tuskegee (Institute) University, his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and Ph.D. in Applied Mechanics from Howard University. Barton joined MSU Fall 2020, after completing six years at George Mason University and a 22-year career at the US Naval Academy.
Duncan leads a Northrop Grumman Corporation team that focuses on delivering breakthrough innovation by accelerating insertion and adoption of disruptive technologies that enable accessible, secure and connected architectures, solutions and experiences. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Morgan State University.
Jones is responsible for developing the strategy and providing guidance on the use of innovative and leading-edge technology across CISA. He holds a Doctor of Engineering in Industrial and Systems Engineering with a concentration in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
MSSI is a comprehensive retention and student success program, which focuses on addressing unmet needs and increasing positive outcomes for men of color at the college. The program works to promote and secure the success of each of its student by providing a range of opportunities like paid internships, cultural events and success mentors.
