Military Experience

You may already have the knowledge and skills required for college credit.

At CCBC, we realize that many students arrive to us already having gained college level learning in a subject area and mastered the content of certain courses. CCBC Credit by Military Experience is a way of assessing and articulating Prior Learning credits for CCBC accepted military courses, training, or work experiences that have been evaluated and recommended for college credit. Faculty Evaluators have reviewed military transcripts, ACE recommendations, and other documents to identify recommended college credits.

Credit by Military Experience helps you:

  • Save Time - Accelerate your degree program by moving directly into higher-level courses
  • Save Money - Minimize the rising cost of higher education
  • Move Ahead - Place into the right classes and avoid repeating material that you’ve already learned
  • Graduate on Time - Complete your degree program if you’re a few credits shy of graduation

Military credits are transcribed for free, and CCBC has a procedure in place to evaluate JST and Exhibits submitted by students through ACE.

Initial process

  1. Students need to send official JST, CCAF, or other official organizational military learning transcript/scores to:

  2. Students must to notify the Registrar’s Office (transfereval@ccbcmd.edu) and Subject Matter Faculty Expert (SMFE), Academic Advisor, or Office of Prior Learning Assessment (priorlearning@ccbcmd.edu) that they are requesting their JST be evaluated for courses that apply towards their major.
    • Students must provide their CCBC student ID number (900#) to ensure their name is associated with the correct student record and transcript.

  3. Students need to be sure their major is correct in the CCBC system. Browse majors and required courses in the CCBC Catalog.

  4. Students will receive an email notification that their evaluation of transfer credits has been completed.

  5. If it has been four weeks since the College received the student’s transcript/scores, and the student has not received an email notification of the status of evaluation of transfer credits, the student may email transfereval@ccbcmd.edu to inquire about the timeframe.

If you're not satisfied with the initial transcript evaluation

  1. Students may submit a “Request for a Transcript Re-evaluation” form (forms available in Academic Advising, Degree Acceleration Office, or Enrollment Services Center) or send an email to transfereval@ccbcmd.edu to request a re-evaluation of transfer credit.
    • When submitting the Request for Transcript Re-Evaluation, be sure the student specifies which Military Course title and ACE number they are attempting to transfer into CCBC. For example, Criminal Investigation: ARMY 17280027v105/70-12/48. Students may retrieve this information directly from JST.

  2. If the initial transcript evaluation results do not include any transfer credit, and the student is positive that military courses should be worth college credit, please have student email priorlearning@ccbcmd.edu (Coordinator of Transfer and Degree Acceleration) with the Course or Occupation Exhibits (similar to a syllabus or CCO but for military), for the courses or occupations requested for evaluation. Students can find this information at: ACE Military Guide - Catalog Search (acenet.edu).
    • The Coordinator of Transfer and Degree Acceleration will then work with CCBC academic departments to determine if the requested courses fulfill course and career objectives. Course content must cover at least 70% of the learning objectives of the Common Course Outline for the CCBC course. Completed military coursework does not have to be a 1 to 1 fit. For instance, 2 military courses could equate to 1 CCBC course or vice versa.

  3. After a determination is made, the Registrar’s office and student will be notified of the outcome. This may take 2 weeks to several months to accomplish depending on the time of year the exhibits are submitted.
