Content Roles

From collaborators to contributors and owners, many CCBC employees play a role in assisting the Web Management Team with updating the content of the website.

Content Collaborator

Content collaborators are CCBC employees who assist with gathering content for contributors and the Web Management Team. CMS (Sitecore) training and access is not required.

Catalog leaders work with the Web Management Team to ensure the program data is adequately updated.

Content Contributors

Content contributors are CCBC full-time employees who have been designated by the Dean or Vice President as officially responsible for posting content on the website. Contributors have been trained and certified in the use of CMS (Sitecore) editing functions and college web standards.

Depending on specific workflows, content contributors may also be content owners.

Content Owners

Content owners are CCBC full-time employees who are organizationally responsible for the accuracy of certain content in which they are subject matter experts. They are responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the content within their respective areas and that the content adheres to the established CCBC Web Content Standards. Content owners collaborate with the Web Team to design and develop new pages for the CCBC website.

Their function in the publishing workflow is to review and approve content for accuracy and adherence to standards prior to final approval. They are trained in the use of CMS approval functions and college web standards.

Terms and definitions

We know there are a lot of terms to know and understand when it comes to Sitecore and the CCBC website. Many of the terms on this page are referred to and explained during Sitecore training. Some are Sitecore specific while others are common CCBC terminology.

Accordion The accordion allows you to display a large amount of information, in a clean and space-saving manner.

Accessibility Universal design in which all products created must be usable by people with the widest range of abilities, operating within the widest possible range of situations. This is about making things accessible to all people—whether they have a disability or not.
ADA Stands for Americans with Disabilities Act. They are standards that state all electronic and information technology must be accessible to people with disabilities.
Alias Provides an alternative URL for a CCBC web page in Sitecore.

Breadcrumb Menu A type of secondary navigation scheme that reveals the user's location in a website.

Body Copy Field The default field for placing content at the top of the main content area.

Call to Action (CTA) CTAs allow you to create a clear and prominent link to other relevant sections within Sitecore, PDFs, and other useful sources of information.

Carousel Displays slides containing images with optional captions above the main content area.

Certificate Credit certificates are earned by completing 30 or more credit hours of specific courses. This term also applies to non-credit certificates earned by successful completion of a non-credit program.
Child Page Sub-item of a parent page that provides focused information detail beneath an area landing page.

Child pages are indicated in the red box. High School Student Programs is the 'parent' page.
Chunk Similar to the body copy, this allows content to be placed after other content items.

For example, you would use a chunk when content is needed below an accordion.
Class A class is a unique section of a course, which is taught by a specific instructor at a certain time on specific days in an associated location.
Connection Block Typically used to display multiple contacts. Additionally the Connection block is a way to feature other content in the right rail, such as maps/directions.

While it looks similar to the Contact Us Block, it is a completely different rendering.
Contact Us Block Used to display contact information for one point of contact.

Content Item A Sitecore item that contains information or media that will appear on the published website.
Content Tree The Content Tree is a hierarchical view of the content in the Sitecore system that shows child items grouped under their parents. The Content Tree Structure is displayed by default and contains the hierarchy of folders and content items comprising the site
Course A specific topic being taught by the college (e.g. ENGL 101). Each course will be comprised of one or more classes or sections.
Credit Describes an offering that, when successfully completed, applies college credits on a student’s transcript toward a degree or certificate.
Degree Associate degrees require approximately 60 credit hours and are comprised of general education and program specific courses.
Event Date driven content that is organized by, sponsored by or co-sponsored by CCBC entities (e.g. departments, centers, colleges and/or officially sanctioned student organizations) and are publicized on the online events calendar. Learn more about appropriate events in our event policy »
Event Block A rendering used to display events on relevant pages of the website. They are configured off of tags.

For example, on the Arts and Culture page, all events/performances with the tag ‘Arts’ will display in the event block on this page.
Headlines News articles written by the Media Relations Team that appears on the CCBC homepage.

In the News This rendering is used to feature external content from other news outlets about CCBC. It must be content from an online source and it needs to be able to be viewed by any user—no login required.

Item Locking Prevents multiple users from editing the same item at the same time. If two or more users manage to edit the same item simultaneously, only the changes that were made by the user who clicks save will be available.

Left Navigation The Left Navigation, located in the left-hand column, contains links to the main sections of the CCBC website and provides easy access to this section of the website no matter what page you are viewing.

Licensure Associated with non-credit offerings that help students earn a license in a particular field.
Media Library The location in Sitecore where all media files—images and PDFs—are stored.

The Media Library can only be accessed through the Rich Text Editor (RTE). A Sitecore user may visit any page they have access to edit in order to open the RTE to access the Media Library.

To find the Media Library in the RTE, look for a square picture icon.
Newsroom A hub on the website to present any news about CCBC such as news articles and press releases written by the CCBC Media Relations Team. In addition, we feature external news sources written about CCBC. All content displayed in the CCBC Newsroom is managed by Media Relations.
Non-credit Describes an offering taken to gain knowledge or skills that does not award college credit or count towards a degree or certificate.
Orange Border Block A rendering we use to group related, but separate pieces of information on a page.

Page Editor The Page Editor allows you to easily make changes to items directly on the page. You can edit most of the items that are visible on the page—text, links and some renderings.

Whenever you login to Sitecore, you'll be prompted to open the Page Editor.
Parent Page
Also known as landing pages, a parent page is a hub for related subject area information. They represent thematically related content in broad categories.

Applying to CCBC is the parent page (in red). Everything below is a child page of Applying to CCBC.
Programs Defines a group of courses that lead to a degree or certificate (credit or non-credit) at CCBC.
Program and Course Finder A search feature in Sitecore directly tied with Acalog (online catalog) to present real time information on programs and courses. Any page on the CCBC website that includes Programs-and-Courses-Finder in the URL, is a page that comes into Sitecore via Acalog. Changes to such pages need to be made in Acalog, not Sitecore.

Renderings A generic Sitecore term used to refer to any of the “elements” or “modules” that we can put on a page to display content.

For example, Event Blocks, Orange Border Blocks, Carousels, Chunks, Contact Us blocks, etc.
Responsive Web Design  Responsive web design is an approach in which websites are crafted to provide optimal viewing experiences—easy reading and navigation with little resizing, panning, and scrolling—across a wide range of platforms from desktop computers to tablets to mobile devices.
Ribbon The topmost part of the Page Editor is called the ribbon. It provides access to Sitecore editing functionality. The ribbon is comprised of tabs that are segmented into groups.

Rich Text Editor (RTE) A dialog window that allows you to enter or modify text and links without having to use programming code.

Subject A more specific academic discipline that is taught and researched at the college level.
Utility Navigation The utility navigation, in the form of a small text bar at the top of each page, contains links that are relevant and useful for most user groups.

WYSIWYG An acronym for "What You See Is What You Get". The Page Editor in Sitecore is a WYSIWYG editor.
