The Community Book Connection (CBC) is a college-wide reading initiative that promotes a culture of dialogue and debate. Each year, we democratically select a community book that encourages thoughtful discussion and fosters connection between our students, faculty, staff and community. Through events like tailored workshops, keynote lectures, trips off campus and service-learning projects, our community book inspires engagement and provides a shared learning experience.

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd follows Lily Owens as she leaves her troubled home in search of answers about her past. Set in the Civil Rights-era South, she finds refuge with a group of Black beekeeping sisters who help her discover truth and healing. This book was chosen for its powerful exploration of race, identity, chosen family and the human need to find belonging.
The real troubles in life happen when those hidden doors stay closed for too long.
