Leah Goodman dreamed of becoming an interior designer or architect. But high school challenges and the cost of four-year colleges made her feel cautious about pursuing either. With limited financial resources, she needed a path that would let her explore her passions without taking on massive debt.
“I didn’t want to pay thousands of dollars just to switch my major halfway through my college career,” she says. “CCBC’s affordability has allowed me to commute to college, fund my clubs, explore more educational opportunities and focus on my studies instead of picking up a job to afford tuition.”
For Leah, CCBC offers a supportive and expansive learning experience that surpasses what she has seen at some four-year schools.
Going to a community college... you’re a somebody that your professors know about. There are more opportunities for you to grow and expand.
After taking some classes, Leah ultimately chose to pursue a career in interior design, a field she describes as both challenging and rewarding.
“I love how complex being an interior designer can be. I enjoy being detail-oriented and using my artistic ability to craft something beautiful and functional,” she says.
In addition to flexing her creative muscles, she’s grown academically through the CCBC Honors College.
“I’ve become a much better learner. Honors has taught me how to study efficiently and be a better public speaker, leader and listener,” she says. At CCBC, she’s had opportunities to put these skills to use as a spokesperson at events like the open house and BCPS counselors’ breakfast.
Outside the classroom, Leah is involved in the Interior Design Club, Honors Scholars, Phi Theta Kappa and the Student Alumni Council. She is also a student ambassador who creates content for CCBC’s Instagram to showcase what it's like to be a student here.
“I love CCBC and want everyone to know just how great this school really is,” she says.
Once Leah earns her associate degree in interior design, she plans to continue her studies at a local four-year institution through the Degrees to Succeed program, confident that CCBC has given her a strong, affordable start.
Leah is part of the Fresh Faces 2025-26 cohort.
